“In the beginning I designed this blocky coat for Credence, but on Ezra it was too strong. There was too much coat and the film-makers really wanted to show that he was vulnerable to the world, so we stripped him down to no coat. Instead he wears just a waistcoat, which reflects a working man’s clothes. And then I used a colour on him that made him feel warm and vulnerable in the darkness of the world surrounding him – he’s a guy who until the end has no idea that he has any power at all. He’s a turtle without his shell and that’s where we went with Credence.”
